Design Lives Here!

What do you do when you see a problem?  Our kids find a solution!  Mrs. Felix’s 5th grade STREAM class participated in the “Design Lives Here” challenge.  Through the challenge, student teams are tasked with identifying a problem, then designing and building a device that solves the problem. At the end of the challenge, each team presented their invention for a school-wide vote.  The final winners were a marker cart invented by Ella and Gia Wicks, and a garbage gutter system invented by Carter Morrison and Cory Edwards. Ella and Gia’s marker cart was specially designed with slots to keep marker caps in place.  Carter and Cory’s garbage gutter system collects items that are dropped underneath the bleachers to make cleanup easier. These two teams went on to attend a regional competition with students from other schools across Western Pennsylvania.  At the competition, students presented their invention to a team of engineers for voting.  In addition to the contest, participants were grouped in new teams and enjoyed a day of engineering challenges.  It was a fun, exciting day. The kids had a great experience!
